It is the classic southern rock song, and despite some political controversy it did well on the U.S. Charts. It reached # 8 on the charts.

The 45 version I have is the Canadian pressing, MCA 4025. It was produced by Al Kooper, longtime studio musician for many well known artists (such as Dylan). He was also the founding member of Blood, Sweet and Tears.
